I see a face at the window again
the sunlight dripping strings of drool
there is a place where the ashes turn to rain
and flocks of insects rise from the scum
and form into clouds and the light that passes through them
shoots its arrows of glass and the rainbows make a sign that reads
"all of the sand you can cross and all the water. . ."
oh I got the spurs
blasting in place you can see the hillside falling
who would have build so goddamned high
gearshift knobs on a yellow John Deere tractor
reach and tremble at the sky
the lips they inflate and the features crack and blister
and I can't hear the knocking at my door
as the wind blows it off its hinges and I can see caribou in the street
oh I got the spurs
flowering plants spring from the cracks in the buildings
and the radio is blasting us to sleep
there's a man and he's talking about buying the place he works at
and someone calls and says they disagree
the wind makes its way through the frames of unmade buildings
and the water starts to trickle down the hill
and it forms into pockets on the liquor store below
oh I got the spurs
I start to turn, I pick up my bag and utensils
there's a lot of salvage work to do
lines are forming at the bus stops and in the parking areas
and the children are trundled off to school
the sky it is blue and imprinted in Helvetica
that only a fuckhead could read
and the words go by so quickly that the letters turn to drops of rain
oh I got the spurs
